How far behind are we in Neonatal Healthcare?

Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy is a condition in Newborns caused by decreased Oxygen and limited blood flow to the brain. The primary causes for this condition are namely, birth trauma, infections, umbilical cord prolapse, poor obstetric care, substance abuse etc. The condition severely impacts the brain of the newborn, causing developmental disorders or death. Life-long disabilities hinder the lives of the patients and their families. Every year, 28 deaths per 1000 live births are seen solely in the Indian Subcontinent. The factors contributing to this condition are varied; the number of cases are enormous and the solution is beyond the reach of many.
Newborns diagnosed with HIE is typically recommended for immediate Hypothermia Therapy. A decade old protocol that is accepted worldwide, Therapeutic Hypothermia is best administered within 6 hours of birth (Golden Hours). The therapy aims at reducing the core temperature of the patient to 33.5 deg C and maintaining the same for 72 hours. The low temperature prevents further neural death and brain damage, and promotes cell and organ recovery. After cooling, the patient is warmed back to normal temperature. A lot of studies have demonstrated the significant benefits of cooling; the reduced risk of mortality and disabilities in future are amongst the many.
